Wednesday is May Day – Are You Ready to Go Back in Time?

In a couple of days, it will be the first of May.  In some parts of the world, May Day is a traditional spring holiday, a day that signals rebirth and new beginnings.

Unfortunately, May Basket Day is a tradition that has become lost over time. Back in simpler times, people rang in the first of May with a particularly charming and delightful tradition. People would take all the flowers they gathered at the end of April’s showers, arrange them in a homemade basket, along with small gifts and candies, and then hang them on the doors of friends and neighbors as a means of friendship and welcoming them into warmer weather.

It was also a way for young love to blossom. Boys would hang baskets on the doorknobs of girls they liked. They would knock on the door and quickly run away. If the girl caught the boy leaving the basket, she would chase him down in an effort to steal a kiss. Girls hung baskets on their favorite beau’s door, too.  I love the nostalgic look of these vintage images, don’t you?

I made some May Baskets in the traditional cone shape today — a great way to use some retiring Designer Series Paper and ribbon!  I used the beautiful All My Love Designer Series Paper – soft pinks and Soft Sea Foam accents….yum!

May Basket 1 - Daisy Lane - Mary Hanson - Up North Stampin' - Stampin' Up!

The template I used for the cone pattern can be found HERE!  It’s easy to trace and cut once you print a master template!

I used Tear and Tape from Stampin’ Up! to attached the cone together.  The Daisy is from the new Daisy Lane Stamp Set, coming out in June in the annual catalog — it goes with our existing Daisy Punch!  Love it!  I thought I’d give you a sneak peek!  Our current Daisy Delight Stamp Set works perfectly.  I punched the double daisies after stamping with Flirty Flamingo and added some punched leaves in Soft Sea Foam cardstock.  (Do you like my wine glass holder?  haha)

May Basket 2 - Mary hanson - Up North Stampin' - Stampin' Up!

I challenge you to make some fun May baskets with your kids — or for your own friends –and then celebrate a holiday that may be lost from our history forever!

Happy May Day!!

Wow — April’s PP is a Touch of Spring!

Stampin’ Up! and Paper Pumpkin hit it out of the ol’ ballpark with their April kit!  We made three full-sized cards of three different designs — NINE cards total with lovely matching envelopes, and each design is just beautiful.

The stamp set we received in the kit is going to be useful all year long for lots of general occasions, and I loved the Mother’s Day stamp.  Isn’t that flower beautiful!  And yes, it’s in the “Distinktive” style!

A bonus:  we got a cute acrylic box to store the cards in, OR to give as a boxed set.  See the box at the left?  Super cute!  What a beautiful gift!  Who wouldn’t love a handmade gift from you?

Everything is Rosy! A Surprise Suite for May!

Hope you’re having a GREAT weekend!  In just four days, on May 1st, Stampin’ Up! is unveiling a brand new suite of products – “Everything is Rosy,” and oh my goodness, I am IN LOVE.  If you sometimes wonder what to order that goes with other products, this is a great way to get a set of products that ALL go together – no guesswork!  The suite is a UNIT PRICE — the products will not be sold ala carte.  Wait until you see the beautiful samples at the end of this post!

Product Medley

This is a limited-edition suite, only available from May 1 to May 31 (or while stocks last and we know they’re going to fly fast!) and it contains the most incredible set of products:  Stamps, dies, embellishments, foil, shimmer paint, foiled designer paper, die cut shapes, accents and more! It’s incredible.

As demos, we usually get a chance to order a little earlier in order to prepare samples; however, as this isn’t a ‘kit’ but instead a full suite of products, we are going to get access to it at the same time as everyone. So seriously, order on May 1st if you can, I can’t see this hanging around.

So here’s the list of what you get. If you start adding up everything you get, you’ll see the value is definitely there for the price.  It’s amazing!

  • Everything is Rosy stamp set
  • 10 coordinating dies
  • Melon Mambo Ruched Ribbon (10 yards)
  • Night of Navy ribbon with Rose Gold metallic edge (10 yards) (This is SOooo pretty!)
  • Rose Gold shimmer paint
  • 6 x 6″ stack of Foil Accented DSP (48 sheets, 8 each of 6 double-sided designs)
  • 6 x 6″ Rose Gold Foil (8 sheets)
  • 3 sheets of die cuts, 2 are Foil Printed
  • Rose Gold Die Cuts – 4 sheets, 2 of each design
  • Rose Gold Mirror Embellishments (adhesive backed)

At OnStage in Minneapolis a few weeks ago, we got to watch Stesha Bloodhart, a Stampin’ Up Artisan, present this suite, so I can now show you her samples.  She made some full-size cards and then a set of three-by-three cards with a coordinating pizza box.  Just sit back and look at these beauties…

A Fond Farewell to a Classic!

We knew it couldn’t last forever, but I am still sad at the upcoming retirement of an all-time classic stamp set from Stampin’ Up! — Lovely as a Tree.  It has graced the catalogs of so many paper crafters since 2001 — 18 years!  It will be retiring on June 3, and will surely be a valuable treasure for years to come!

Lovely as a tree

Enjoy some samples by artisans over the years.  And if you don’t have it yet, now is the time to get it, while supplies last, as it will only go up in value, and be way overpriced on sites such as E-Bay once it retires!  Click below to go shopping with me!

May Day: A Forgotten Tradition!

What is May Day?

In some parts of the United States, May Baskets are made for May Day, a celebration of Spring. May Day Baskets are small baskets usually filled with flowers or treats and left at someone’s doorstep. The giver rings the bell and runs away before the receiver can catch them and give them a ‘kiss!’

May Baskets 1 - Country Home- Botanical Butterfly Designer Series Papers - Mary Hanson - Up North Stampin' - Stampin' Up!

I remember making May baskets as a little girl.  We’d fill little paper cups with handles fashioned on them, and then fill with candy.  We’d climb into the car, and my mom would drive us around the neighborhood.  We’d stop at a friend’s house, run up to their front door, ring the doorbell, and leave the basket, running back to the car as fast as we could!

Daisy Lane - Sweet Cups - Country Home - Floral Romance Designer Series Paper - Mary Hanson - Up North Stampin'

According to the NPR, “Perhaps considered quaint now, in decades past May Basket Day — like the ancient act of dancing around the maypole — was a widespread rite of spring in the United States.”

Botanical Butterflies Designer Series Paper - Sweet Cups - Country Home - Mary Hanson - Up North Stampin'

We made our May Day baskets out of paper cups with pipe cleaner handles.  I made a couple of May Day baskets using the Sweet Cups from Stampin’ Up! along with some spring-like Designer Series papers.  I used two punches to punch out the butterflies and daisies for my handles.  All supplies are found below, where you can just click on the products and go shopping with me!

May Day Baskets 2 - Daisy Lane - Floral Romance Designer Series Papers - Up North Stampin' - Mary Hanson

Whether or not you practice the rite of Spring called May Day, I’m happy to be experiencing warmer weather and seeing signs of spring up in Northern Minnesota!

Have a blessed Easter, one and all!
